Stella Mary Newton OBE 1901 - 2001
(dated 1914, oil on canvas 15in x 18in)
When Stella Mary (never just Stella) was a small child she was the subject of several articles in the Clarion. Her mother Georgiana Pearce (nee Hoby) a concert pianist, was apparently a music critic on the Clarion. Henry's daughter, Stella Mary, was born in 1901. She went into the theatre, in time becoming a theatre designer. After a career in haute couture she became an academic and worked at the National Gallery dating pictures by the style of the clothes. She set up the History of Dress department at the Courtauld Institute. She married Eric Newton an art critic.
